BANGOR, Maine -- Four Black Bears scored in double-digits as the University of Maine women's basketball team (9-8, 3-1 AE) picked up its third-straight America East league victory after it defeated Vermont 92-62 on Tuesday evening at Cross Insurance Center. Maine's 92 points were its most in a single game since it matched the scoring feat in 2003 against Yale.
Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) led all Maine scorers as she tallied 15 point in the first half, hitting her first six shots, before ending with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Cherrish Wallace (Pasadena, Calif.) recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) totaled 16 points while Chantel Charles (London, U.K.) added a career-high 11.
Maine outscored Vermont 52-26 in the paint while tallying 31 points off 22 Catamount turnovers. Maine shot 37-for-69 (53.6-percent) while pulling 36 rebounds and handing out 24 assists.
Maine opened the game on fire, breaking out a 9-0 lead in the opening 1:55, before ending its start on a 15-8 run into the first media timeout. Both Wood and Roberts paced the Black Bears with seven points and four points, respectively, through the torrid start.
Maine kept on rolling in the half, outscoring Vermont 12-5 capped by a Wood jumper as she poured in her fifth bucket of the half to put Maine went up 27-13 just over eight minutes remaining in the first frame.
With Maine leading by 14 after a coast-to-coast layup from Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria), Vermont started to chip away at the lead as it staged a 7-0 run to cut the Maine advantage down 35-28 with 4:26 to play.
Maine responded with a 9-2 run ended when Wallace zipped a pass inside to Wood for two as Maine regained a 14-point edge and entered the half with a 13-point advantage.
Wood led Maine's first half attack with 15 points on 6-for-6 shooting as the lack Bears went 20-for-40 in the opening 20 minutes.
Maine kept up its rapid pace in the second half as it went on a 9-0 run to take a 21 point with 10:45 left in the game. Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) started the run with a layup fueled from a Wallace assist before Charles hit back-to-back shots including a three. Koizar ended the run as she slashed inside for two to push Maine's lead to 68-47.
The Black Bears maintained their 21 point lead 12:05 into the half before putting together a 12-0 run to stretch their lead out to 33, 86-53. Maine would hit the 90 point plateau for the first time since 2003 on a free throw from Milica Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) with 1:31 to play before taking the contest 92-62.
Maine travels to Albany on Saturday where it will meet up with the defending America East champion Great Danes at 2 PM.
