ORONO, Maine -- The 2014 America East Fans' Choice Player of the Year award ballots are open now open as both Xavier Pollard and Liz Wood represent the Maine men and women's basketball teams. Black Bear fans are encouraged to vote at the Facebook link above to see your favorite players selected as the America East Fans Choice Player of the Year.
Xavier Pollard has been the team leader in points for most of the season and has been featured in the top-five in league scoring for a majority of the year. The junior guard was recently named to the Collegehoopsdaily.com America East All-Conference team and was named America East player of the week after helping Maine to back-to-back victories against UMBC and New Hampshire earlier in the year. He averages 15.1 points, leading the team; he is also second on the team in rebounds (4.6), assists (3.9) and steals (1.5). Pollard recently recorded his third double-double of his career against Stony Brook, recording 21 points and 11 rebounds in a near-upset of the Seawolves.
Liz Wood has done it all for the Black Bears this season. At the time of release, Wood ranked seventh in the league in scoring (12.3), seventh in rebounding (6.7), tenth in field goal percentage (43.0), ninth in assists (3.0), sixth in steals (2.0), eighth in assists/turnover ratio (1.4) and ninth in overall minutes (31.1). The sophomore forward, who has led Maine in scoring in 14 games this season, has recorded double-figure scoring in 20 games including four 20+ point efforts and four double-double performances. Wood, the reigning America East Co-Rookie of the Year, is closing in on 700 points for her career and 400 rebounds in just her sophomore season.
