Women's Basketball Hands Out Awards at Annual Banquet

April 14, 2008

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's basketball team handed out its five individual awards this past weekend at the team's annual year-end banquet. The event was held at the Buchanan Alumni House on the Orono campus, and saw the following awards handed out: Best Defensive Player (Kris Younan), Academic Award (Brittany Boser), Pre-Season Award (Kristin Baker), Most Improved Player (Katia Bratishko), and Leadership/Community Involvement Award (Colleen Kilmurray).

Younan, a 5-6 senior guard from Chicago, Ill., earned the defensive player award after leading the team in steals and ranking third in America East in the same category this past season. She was the only player in America East to rank in the top five in both steals (3rd) and assists (5th).

Boser, a 6-0 sophomore forward from Palmer, Mass., earned the team's academic award after she posted an above 3.0 grade point average in her chemical engineering major. She earned Maine Scholar-Athlete honors this past February for earning a high GPA.

Baker, a 5-5 sophomore guard from Bingham, Maine, earned the pre-season award for being the top performer in various events during the team's six-week fall strength & conditioning program. Baker and Boser joined with fellow teammate Amanda Tewksbury to serve as the team's three captains during the 2007-08 season.

Bratishko, a 5-11 forward from Annandale, Va., earned the most improved award after averaging nearly two points and two rebounds per game this season. She averaged 10 minutes played per game over 17 contests this season after playing a total of just seven minutes all of her freshman campaign (2006-07).

Kilmurray, a 6-0 forward from Wall, N.J., earned the leadership/community award for her work throughout the local communities during the past year. A secondary education major, Kilmurray took part in several events this past year, including working with athletes in the Special Olympics. The award also recognized her leadership skills on and off the court with the Black Bears.
