Former Black Bear Lelia Sacré to Umpire U-21 National League Contests
ORONO, Maine -- Former University of Maine field hockey student-athlete Lelia Sacré (North Delta, British Columbia) has been selected to accompany the Canadian Under-21 Women's National Team to Europe in July. Sacré, a Surrey Sharks/Delta Falcons Umpire, will be umpiring matches against other national league squads from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Spain.
Sacré has worked hard to get to where she currently is in the umpiring field. She began her umpiring career as a British Columbia rated umpire in 2006 and received the honor of being named the Field Hockey British Columbia Female Umpire of the Year in 2009. Last summer, the former Black Bear was awarded her Canadian rating at the Senior Nationals in Victoria, where she received the honor of calling the Bronze medal contest. This past January, Sacré was named to Field Hockey Canada's Targeted International list and was most recently appointed to the Canadian Senior and Under-16 Nationals.
A month after being named to the Targeted International list, Sacré was hired by the Delta Falcons as umpire coordinator where she advised and guided the club's 35 junior and beginner umpires. In April, the former Black Bear defender was assigned as Umpire Coordinator for the Vancouver Women's Field Hockey League for the 2012-13 campaign.
Sacré will also be calling a group of games for the Canadian Under-21 Women's National teams' matches against Mesico in June at her home field in Surrey, British Columbia.
Sacré ended her Black Bear career with 19 goals and 12 assists for 50 points in 48 career games. In her final season at Maine, Sacré tallied seven goals and three assists for 17 points while helping guide the Black Bears to a 16-4 overall record. In 2009, Sacré was named to the WomensFieldHockey.com All-America Third Team and the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region First Team while also being named a unanimous selection to the America East First Team.
