Hamilton's Hat-Trick Powers Maine Past Quinnipiac, 5-3
ORONO, Maine -- Annabelle Hamilton (North Vancouver, British Columbia) tallied a hat-trick as the University of Maine field hockey team was able to pick up its fifth-straight victory as it defeated Quinnipiac 5-3 on Friday evening. The win moves Maine to 6-4 on the season while the Bobcats even up at 4-4.
Zoe Berkey (Duncan, British Columbia) started the scoring for the Black Bears as her second goal of the season gave Maine a 1-0 advantage 5:01 into the first half. Berkey's original shot was saved by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Nicole Lewis however, the save rolled back to Berkey who was able to bury the shot high into the left corner of the cage.
Hamilton would tally the next goal to build Maine's lead to 2-0. Zoe Adkins (Coquitlam, British Columbia) started the play by inserting the ball on a Maine penalty corner to the top of the circle. Berkey made the stop and quickly moved the ball over to Hamilton. Hamilton would then carry the ball to her left before firing a shot through the crowd and into the back of the cage.
Maine's third goal of the evening would come just 1:25 later, once again off the stick of Hamilton. Once again on the penalty corner, Adkins perfect insert would find Berkey at the top of the circle, Berkey again made the stop, setting up Hamilton perfect as she blasted another shot into the back of the Bobcat cage.
Quinnipiac would answer as Jennalise Taylor recorded the first Bobcat score of the day. Working off its own penalty corner, Quinnipiac's Jess Rusin controlled the ball at the top of the circle before sliding a pass to her left for Taylor. Taylor would settle the ball before ripping a shot which snuck past Maine goalkeeper Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta).
Maine would tack on its fourth goal of the evening with no time remaining on the clock at the end of the first half. The Black Bears would again take advantage of a penalty corner try as Hamilton's shot from the point was saved by Lewis. However, the save would sail into the air and find Becca Paradee (Gardiner, Maine) who was able to tap the ball out of the air and into the cage, giving Maine a 4-1 lead at the break.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the second half as Danielle Allan scored on the left post off a rebound from her own original shot.
Maine's penalty corner would again answer as Hamilton completed her hat-trick with 8:33 remaining in the second half. Adkins insert skidded to the top of the circle where Berkey made the stop for Hamilton. Hamilton would then rifle a back-handed shot through the crowd in front for Maine's fifth goal of the match.
Just over a minute later, Quinnipiac's Christa Romano would find the back of the cage as she tipped in a shot from Lauren Zimniski. However, it would be too little too late as Maine was able to hang on to the victory, 5-3.
The Black Bears outshot Quinnipiac 17-7 and also held the edge in penalty corners 11-6.
Frisch picks up her fifth win as she improves to 5-1 after making a pair of saves in the cage for Maine. Lewis falls to 4-3 after making six saves on the losing end for the Bobcats.
The Black Bears return to action when they open America East Conference play next weekend as they travel to battle Vermont on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
