Field Hockey Defeats Fairfield 2-1 in Overtime Thriller
ORONO, Maine -- Zoe Adkins (Coquitlam, British Columbia) picked up her fourth goal of the season in a big way on Saturday afternoon as the senior captain tallied the game-winner, 3:32 into the overtime period to give the University of Maine field hockey team (8-5, 2-0 America East) a 2-1 victory over visiting Fairfield (7-7, 0-2). Senior goalkeeper Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta) made several key stops in the cage for Maine while Hannah Keating (York, Maine) added a goal for the Black Bears.
After back and forth action for much of the first 20 minutes, Keating was able to break a scoreless tie with her third goal of the season. Keating received the ball right in front of the cage and put back-to-back shots on net which were saved by Stags' goalkeeper Maddy Sposito. However, Keating would make the third try count as she flipped the ball high on the left post for Maine's first tally of the day.
With 5:30 remaining in the opening half, Frisch made the first of her key stops on the day to keep the Black Bears in front. Fairfield would come on an attack off a penalty corner as the Stags' leading goal scorer, Felicitas Heinen, flicked a shot from the top of the circle on net. Frisch was able to extend and make a big save with her right pad, keeping Maine on top heading into the half.
However, just 2:28 into the second half Fairfield would knot the score at 1-1 when Kaitlyn Taddeo found the back of the cage. Taddeo would come out of a scramble in front with the ball and slid a shot towards the Maine cage. Her shot tipped off a Maine stick and redirected up and over a sprawled out Frisch who was looking to make the original low save.
Back and forth action would follow for much of the second half as the game remained tied thanks in part to another pair of big saves by Frisch. With eight-minutes remaining in the second half, Frisch made back-to-back point block stops for Maine. The senior goalkeeper would make the original stop on a try from Michelle Loor before turning arond and making another huge save on a rebound shot from Emily Leo to keep the game tied and send things into overtime.
After shuttng down a pair of Fairfield corner tries early in the extra period, the Black Bears would quickly move the ball into the Stags' zone where they would create a penalty corner opportunity of their own. Adkins inserted the ball to the top of the key where Zoe Berkey (Duncan, British Columbia) stopped the ball and setup Annabelle Hamilton (North Vancouver, British Columbia) for a blast. Sposito laid out and made the save on Hamilton's shot but could not recover as the rebound found Adkins' stick and she was able to flip the ball up and into the back of the cage, giving the Black Bears the 2-1 win.
Maine outshot the Stags 13-9 while Fairfield held the edge in penalty corner tries, 10-8.
Frisch picks up her sixth-straight win as she moves to 7-1 in the cage for Maine after making five saves. Sposito falls to 6-6 after making seven stops for the Stags.
Maine returns to action on Monday, Oct. 8 when it welcomes Brown University to the Maine Field Hockey Complex for a 12 p.m. start.
