Field Hockey Falls to #23 Albany 1-0; Clinches Playoff Berth
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine Field Hockey team fell in a tightly contested contest to #23 Albany by a score of 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The loss slips Maine back to 9-8 overall and 2-2 in America East action while Albany improves to 9-7 and 2-2 in league play. Annabelle Hamilton (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Elke Jacobse (Badhoevedorp, Netherlands) each had a pair of shots for the Black Bears.
The Great Danes tallied the lone goal of the afternoon at the 12:54 mark of the opening half as Corrine McConville tallied her 11th goal of the season. The goal developed off a penalty corner as Jessica Longstreth insert the ball to Laura Page who made the stop, setting up McConville for a shot which snuck past Maine goalkeeper Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta).
The Black Bears would keep battling throughout the remainder of the game but just couldn't find the back of the cage, dropping the close match 1-0.
Albany held the edge in shots 15-6 and also had the advantage in penalty corners 7-3.
Frisch picks up the loss in the cage for Maine as she falls to 7-4 on the season after making five saves. Kristi Troch picks up the win for Albany, improving to 9-7 after making three saves for the Great Danes.
Even with the loss, the Black Bears have secured a spot in the America East Championship tournament. A location for the tournament is still yet to be decided.
Maine continues play with its final non-conference game of the season as it hosts Hofstra tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
