Field Hockey Downs Hofstra, 2-1

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine field hockey team finished up its regular season non-conference slate with a 2-1 victory over visiting Hofstra (6-10) on Sunday afternoon. Annabelle Hamilton's (North Vancouver, British Columbia) late second-half goal was the difference as the Black Bears picked up their tenth win and moved to 10-8 overall. Cassidy Svetek (Burlington, Ontario) also scored for the Black Bears.

Svetek got the scoring started with her eighth tally of the season, 7:31 into the opening half. Holly Stewart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) broke out on a break away as Stewart carried the ball into the right side of the Hofstra circle. Stewart bounced a pass over Pride goalkeeper Kaitlyn De Turo to Svetek who was able to corral the pass and tip a shot into the back of the cage.

The Pride knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal 4:12 into the second half. Setup on a penalty corner try, Hofstra inserted the ball and worked a pass along the top of the circle and over to the left side where Micaela Gallagher fired a shot towards the Maine cage. Krizia Layne was in perfect position as she stuck her stick out, redirecting a shot past Maine goalkeeper Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta).

Hamilton regained a one goal edge for the Black Bears with a goal at the 65:31 mark. Working off a penalty corner, Stewart inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Zoe Berkey (Duncan, British Columbia) made the stop and slid a pass to Hamilton. Hamilton would carry the ball along the left side of the circle before unleashing a reverse stick shot which sailed through the defense and slammed the back of the cage.

The Black Bears held strong the rest of the way, taking the contest 2-1. Maine outshot the Pride 12-5 but it was Hofstra with a 6-4 advantage on penalty corner attempts.

Frisch improves to 8-4 on the year after making one save for Maine. De Turo falls to 6-10 overall after making five saves for the Pride.

The Black Bears return to action for their final regular season contest of 2012 when they welcome New Hampshire to the Maine Field Hockey Complex on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Maine as the Black Bears will honor their three seniors prior to the game.
