Maine Field Hockey Rolls Brown, 6-0
BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Maine field hockey team had three players score a pair of goals each as the Black Bears defeated Brown, 6-0, in the Catamount Field Hockey Classic in Burlington, Vt., Sunday afternoon. Annabelle Hamilton, Holly Stewart and Marissa Shaw all tallied a pair of markers as Maine improved to 3-4.
The Black Bears scored early and often in the afternoon matinee, with Holly Stewart starting the onslaught in the fourth minute of play. Stewart came in on Brown goalkeeper, Shannon McSweeney, made a move and slipped it in the cage to make it 1-0.
Marissa Shaw made it 2-0, in the 13th after she finished on a Cassidy Svetek deflection.
Senior captain, Annabelle Hamilton scored her fourth goal of the year towards the end of the first half, beating McSweeney, to make it 3-0. Stewart struck again with six seconds left to go in the frame as she took a pass from Sydney Veljacic and firing it home. The Black Bears finished the half up 4-0.
Black Bears continue to pour on the offense as Hamilton tallied her second of the day and her team-leading fifth goal of the season off a penalty stroke pushing the Maine lead to 5-0.
Maine capped the scoring as Shaw broke through for the second time in the contest, firing a shot which deflected off a Brown defender and into the cage.
All told, Maine recorded 41 shots with 31 shots on goal, the team's highest shot output of the season. Likewise, the Black Bears limited Brown to only three shots, with one shot on goal.
Natasha Ford got the start in the cage for the Black Bears, recording one save and her first shutout of her career. McSweeney started for Brown, allowing six goals and making 24 saves.
Maine now heads home for an extended home stand. The team's next match is on Sept. 22, when Central Michigan comes to the UMaine Field Hockey Complex. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
