Black Bears Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against Cal
BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Annabelle Hamilton tallied the lone Maine goal but it wasn't enough as California downed Maine field hockey, 2-1, in Boston, Mass., Sunday afternoon. All three goals were scored in the in the first 30 minutes of the contest as Maine falls to 9-8 overall while Cal improves to 6-10.
Hamilton's team-leading 10th goal of the season was the opening goal of the contest as the Black Bears found the score sheet at the 23:22 mark. Hamilton intercepted a failed clear and fired it past Courtney Hendrickson to make it, 1-0.
Cal responded just over a minute later as Nicole Ballstedt tallied her second of the year off a Jordan O'Reily pass to knot it up at 1-1.
The Bears scored again at the 28:13 mark as leading goal-scorer Lara Kruggel scored her seventh of the season. Natalie Gibbens and Shannon Elmitt recorded assists.
Maine fired 21 shots at the Cal cage including 15 in the second frame but Hendrickson and her Cal defense withstood the offensive barrage and closed out the game with a 2-1 final score.
Natasha Ford made four saves on six shots on goal in the loss while Hendrickson tallied nine stops on 10 shots on goal.
The Black Bears will have a quick turnaround, as the team will play at Providence tomorrow afternoon in Rhode Island. Game is schedule for 4 p.m. Check GoBlackBears for live stats and recap.
