BANGOR, Maine – The Maine Black Bears received national recognition on Tuesday morning, as the squad was named to the 2013 Gladiator by SGH/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team, comprised of schools across the country.
Earlier this season the Black Bears placed 13 members on the America East field hockey all-academic team, while more than half (seven members) were named to the Commissioners' Honor Roll.
This latest academic award comes on the heels of a school ceremony at the University of Maine that honored all student-athletes who excelled in the classroom, as a myriad of field hockey members were honored. Rising junior, Holly Stewart, was one of three Black Bears to earn one of the most prestigious awards given, as she earned the Win "M" Club Dean Smith Awards.
Not only has Maine excelled while hitting the books, many were also honored for their athletic prowess. Rising junior, Annabelle Hamilton was named a Division I All-American as she was recognized as one of 48 players who were deemed the best in the country. Hamilton was named to the All-America third team.
Hamilton wasn't the only player to gain national recognition as she; Nicole Sevey and Stewart were all placed on the NFHCA Northeast region team several weeks earlier. Maine also placed eight members to the America East all-conference teams.
The NFHCA individual national academic award recipiients will be announced tomorrow while the National Scholars of Distinction awards will be announced on Thursday. Stay tuned to GoBlackBears.com for more news on field hockey award-winners.
