BANGOR, Maine – The Maine Black Bears field hockey team made more academic awards news on Wednesday afternoon as the squad placed nine members on the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Team. The nine recipients matches its total in 2011 and is the most members Maine has sent to the list since 2010, when it had 10 players make the team.
Maine had many repeat award winners as Berkey, Keating, Paradee and Stewart all were honored for the third time in their careers while Ford and Sevey were neamed for the second time. Cochran, Rowley and Veljacic all secured their first awards.
These honors are the latest in a long list of academic accolades the team has garnered this season as both the team and specific individuals have been honored for their work inside the classroom and out on the field.
The Black Bears placed 13 members on the America East field hockey all-academic team, while more than half (seven members) were named to the Commissioners' Honor Roll.
This latest academic award comes on the heels of a school ceremony at the University of Maine that honored all student-athletes who excelled in the classroom, as a myriad of field hockey members were honored. Rising junior, Holly Stewart, was one of three Black Bears to earn one of the most prestigious awards given, as she earned the Win "M" Club Dean Smith Awards.
The NFHCA will release one more tomorrow, March 20, as the The 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction will be released.
