CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Maine Black Bears were picked third in the America East preseason poll released by the conference on Tuesday, with only UNH (second) and Albany (first) as the squads picked ahead of the Black Bears.
"We have an experienced and talented team that competes hard each and every game and we are excited to take on the 2014 season," head coach Josette Babineau said.
The Great Danes were selected first receiving a unanimous five votes and 25 points with New Hampshire garnering 20 points. The third-place Black Bears team that returns 17 players from last years' squad, were picked third with 18 points and one first place vote in the poll.
Fairfield took fourth with 13 points with UMass Lowell (eight points) and Vermont (six points) taking fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Black Bears open their 2014 slate with a two-game road trip to Michigan beginning on Aug. 29 playing Central Michigan and following it up with a Sept. 1 matchup with Michigan State. The Black Bears will kick-off their home slate in Orono, Maine, on Sept. 20 against Bryant.
Maine enters 2014 as a veteran-laden team with only three newcomers that weren't apart of the team during the 2013 season. Belfast, Maine native Madison Cummings will follow in her sister's (Brittney Cummings) footsteps and play for the squad, while the Black Bears welcome Appalachian State transfer and Belgrade, Maine native, Lynnae Lettuich and Old Dominion transfer Emily Corbett.
