Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine announced on Wednesday that 243 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012. One-hundred seventy five student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2011 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-eight first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 243, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.
Maine Has Highest Percentage of Student-Athletes Named to America East Fall Academic Honor Roll

Approximately 63 percent of America East student-athletes competing in fall sports totaling 632 participants earned America East Honor Roll distinction after achieving semester grade-point averages (GPA) of 3.00 or higher. Over half of those student-athletes and 322 total earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the fall semester with a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Maine had the highest percentage of fall student-athletes named to the honor roll as 74.2 percent achieved a 3.00 GPA or higher.

Senior field hockey standout Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) has been named a 2011 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Third-Team All-American for the second-straight season.
Gardiner, Newton Named to All-American Teams, Stewart All-Rookie

Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) have been named to their respective All-American teams as announced by the WomensFieldHockey.com staff today while freshman forward Holly Stewart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) was honored to the All-Rookie squad.
Trio of Field Hockey Seniors Honored to All-Region Teams

Three University of Maine field hockey seniors have been honored to their specific 2011 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Regional Teams. Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) were named to the All-Northeast Region First Team while Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) was honored to the All-Northeast Region Second Team.
