Emery Named Field Hockey Captain

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine field hockey coach Josette Babineau announced today that the team has selected Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) as captain of the 2008 squad. Gigi Niekrash (Madison, Conn.) and Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) will serve as assistant captains for the 2008 season. All three will be captains for the first time. Emery, a forward, has played in 51 career games, totaling 11 goals and six assists for 28 points. She was second on the team in scoring with 10 points last season and led the team in scoring with 14 points during the 2006 season. Emery had a crucial goal in the win against Quinnipiac and has been a steady player throughout her career for the Black Bears. She has been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad, the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and is a three-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. MacDonald, a midfielder, has played in 55 career games and has accumulated 34 career points. MacDonald had goals in wins against Brown and Fairfield, and also had the game-winning assist in overtime against Rhode Island. She was third on the team last season in scoring with eight points and has been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll as well as being a three-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Niekrash, a back, has seen action in 19 games during her career, starting in 14 of them. Niekrash is known for her stellar defensive play for the Black Bears. She has been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll and is a two-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
The trio helped Maine get the prestigious ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Team Award for having the fourth best grade point average in the country. |
