Field Hockey Receives Nine Commitments for 2008 Season

ORONO, Maine--University of Maine field hockey coach Josette Babineau announced today that her team has received nine commitments for the 2008 season. Elizabeth Anderson (Morrill, Maine/Kent's Hill) Ellen Andrews (New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island/University of Prince Edward Island), Molly Arute (Jackson, Maine/Mt. View), Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School), Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School), Courtney Glynn (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet High School), Elizabeth Lincoln (Unity, Maine/Mt. View), Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March Secondary) and Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia/Crofton House School) will be joining the Black Bears this fall. "After graduating such a big class this year, it was very important to bring in players with experience," said Babineau. "Some of these players played nationally and internationally which will help them adapt quickly to the level of play. This class will help us in all areas of the field particularly in goal and on the forward line. Ellen Andrews and Jamie Flagg are transfers to our program and will bring needed experience in midfield and in our backfield. We will have a young team in the fall but these players will add depth to our program and will help us be competitive this season." Anderson was a standout in net for Belfast High School and the Kent's Hill School. The 5-5 goalie led Belfast to three consecutive Maine class B state championships from 2004-06, compiling a 54-0 record in the process. Anderson was the 2006 Most Valuable Defensive Player and an All-State selection. Andrews was a captain at the University of Prince Edward Island where she was named the AUS League and the University of Prince Edward Island Rookie of the Year as her team finished as AUS League champions the last two seasons. A 5-7 midfielder, she captained her Bluefield High School team to three straight Provincial championships.
Arute finished her high school career last season at Mt. View by being named a first team All-KVAC selection. The 5-7 forward was also a member of the Maine Event team for three years as well as a member of the Futures team for three years and the NFT team. Fleck started every game her senior season in net for the Crofton House School and allowed only one goal. The 5-7 goalie led her team to the Independent Schools Association championship, Provincial championship and League championship. Fleck was also a member of Team British Columbia which finished third in 2006 and fourth in 2007 in Canada. Gardiner was a captain for the Crofton House School where she led the team to runner-up finishes in 2005 and 2006 at the Canadian Field Hockey Nationals and was Regional Champion in 2006 and 2007. The 5-7 midfielder also led Crofton to Independent Schools Association Championships from 2002-07, while Gardiner was named the MVP in 2007. Glynn was a captain for Winnacunnet High School where she started all four years, setting the freshman scoring record in her first season. The 5-4 midfielder led the team to three consecutive semi-finals appearances in 2005-07, winning the MVP award her senior season.Glynn was named to the 2007 All-State and Twin State teams, and was also a New England All-American selection. Lincoln was a three-time captain for Mt. View High School where she was named to the Maine Field Hockey Coaches Association All-State team as a senior. The 5-7 midfielder was also a honorable mention All-KVAC and All-Academic selection. Lincoln was a member of 2007 the Maine Event Team, a 2007 Maine Games Gold Winner and a Futures participant as well. Mitchell was a two-year captain for Earl of March Secondary where she led the team to city runner-up finishes in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The 5-2 forward was named team MVP in 2006, and was a Canadian National gold medalist and a National Indoor Gold gold medalist as well. Newton was captain for the Crofton House School where she led the team to the 2006 and 2007 Provincial championship. The 5-5 forward won a gold medal at the Vancouver Regional tournament and a silver medal at the Canadian national tournament while being named to the "Top Ten" team. All National Letter of Intent signings and commitments are contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
