Women’s Hockey East Association Honors League All-Academic Team
The Women’s Hockey East Association has announced that 16 members of the University of Maine women’s ice hockey team have been named to the 2010-11 WHEA All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing. Out of the eight teams that make up the WHEA, the Black Bears led the way with 16 student-athletes honored on this year’s squad.

Black Bears Now Women's Hockey East Playoff Bound
It's official. The University of New Hampshire has lost to Boston College in the final game of the WHEA schedule and the Maine women's ice hockey program has now locked up the sixth and final playoff spot.

Vermont Shuts down Black Bear Attack
Coming into Friday night's contest, Maine was one of the WHEA's most feared offensive teams ranking fifth in the conference in scoring and third in the conference in power play scoring. That all came to a screeching halt Friday night as the Catamounts of Vermont suffocated the Maine shooters all night long en route to a 1-0 victory for the 'Cats.

Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement
he University of Maine announced on Wednesday that 239 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011. One-hundred seventy four student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2010 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-five first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 239, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.

UNH Holds Off Black Bear Sweep
Following Saturday afternoon's historic win at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H., Maine was denied in their second straight upset bid of rival, New Hampshire. The University of Maine was again, led by Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.), who scored two goals for the Black Bears for the second straight game. However, Ward's efforts would not be enough, as the Wildcats were able to rely on a play maker of their own. Kristina Lavoie paced New Hampshire with a career high three points including a goal of her own and two assists.

The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team has defeated the University of New Hampshire in Durham for only the second time, and overall, for only the third time in program history. Season momentum was going against the Black Bears as well; New Hampshire came into the game with two straight wins over nationally-ranked opponents while Maine was dealing with a five game skid. Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) paced the Black Bears with 2 goals and 1 assist as the Maine women stormed back from 2-0 down in the second period to take the first game in the rivalry series 3-2.

Women's Hockey Defeats #8/9 Providence, 3-2
Jennie Gallo’s (Castegar, British Columbia) power play goal 7:03 into the third period would prove to be the difference as the University of Maine women’s ice hockey team defeated #8/9 Providence, 3-2 on Monday afternoon. The win was Maine’s first over a ranked opponent since they defeated #5 Boston College on Nov. 11, 2008 by a score of 5-3 at Alfond Arena. The win moved Maine to 9-8-4 and 3-4-2 in Women’s Hockey East action while Providence fell to 14-6-1 and 5-3-1 in league play.

Women's Ice Hockey Raising Money for Breast Cancer Research; Selling Pink Pucks
The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team is working to raise money for Breast Cancer Research in unique fashion. The Black Bears have been selling pink pucks at many of the University of Maine home athletic events throughout much of the month of December. The pucks can be purchased with a minimum donation of $1. People may write their name on the puck they purchased and a member of the team will hang the puck up in front of the Women’s Ice Hockey office in the hallway outside of Alfond Family Lounge.

Women's Ice Hockey Announces 2010-11 Schedule
ORONO, Maine Head women's ice hockey coach Maria Lewis announced the 2010-11 schedule. The Black Bears open the season with a six-game homestand. The season opener is scheduled for September 24th at 7 p.m. against Sacred Heart. The homestand wraps up with two games against Quinnipiac on October 15th and 16th.

Maine Names Maria Lewis Women's Ice Hockey Coach
University of Maine Director of Athletics Blake James announced today that Maria Lewis has been named head womens ice hockey coach. Lewis comes to the University of Maine after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota, and is known as being a top recruiter. She served as a volunteer assistant with the Black Bears for the 1999-2000 season.
