Women's Hockey Heads to Providence for Hockey East Quarterfinal Action
The University of Maine women’s hockey team (17-10-6,
11-8-2 WHEA) will travel down to Providence, R.I. to take on the
Providence College Friars (14-16-4, 11-8-2 WHEA) in a Hockey East
Quarterfinal match up. The game will take place on Saturday and has
a start time of 2 p.m.
The Black Bears have had a stellar 2011-12 season, ending regular
season play with the most wins in Hockey East play (11) in program
history and tying the most wins in a season with 17.
The two teams have met three times throughout the regular season,
splitting the record 1-1-1. The last time they met was January 22
with the Black Bears emerging victorious in overtime, 3-2.
Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal
from Nicole Anderson; however Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario)
scored her fourth goal of the season to tie it in the second.
Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) netted her 13th goal of
the year late in the second period to give Maine a 2-1 lead.
Corinne Buie would then tie the game at 2-2 with 13:39 remaining in
regulation. Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) lifted the Black Bears
just 2:19 into overtime with her 12th goal of the year, edging the
Friars, 3-2.
Maine is led by Brittany Dougherty who has tallied 33 points on 16
goals and 17 assists with 22 of her points coming during conference
play. Danielle Ward is right behind her with 14 goals and 17
assists for 31 points. Ward is tied for second on the nation with
seven game-winning goals and is just one point shy of 125 for her
career. Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) has 24 points on 11
goals and 13 assists while fellow senior Dawn Sullivan (Enfield,
Nova Scotia) has put away six goals and dished out 12 assists for
18 points. First year classmates Tori Pasquariello (Mississauga,
Ontario) and Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) each have tallied
16 points; Pasquariello on 11 goals and four assists and More on
seven goals, nine assists. Missy Denk (Poplar Grove, Ill.) has 14
points with nine goals and five assists while Brianne Kilgour has
14 points on four goals and 10 assists.
Netminder Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) has played in 29
over the season, earning a record of 13-9-3, a save percentage of
.924, a GAA of 2.20 and three shutouts. Kylie Smith (Apple Valley,
Minn.) has played in nine games during the year. Her record stands
at 3-1-3 with a .897 save percentage, a GAA of 2.30 and a
shutout.
Providence is led by senior forward Abby Gauthier who has 26 points
on seven goals and 19 assists. Ashley Cottrell and Corinne Buie
each have 25 points on the season; Cottrell with 14 goals and 11
assists and Buie with 11 goals and 14 assists. Laura Veharanta will
enter the game with 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points while
Jessica Vella will come into play with eight goals and nine assists
for 17 points. Kate Bacon has score nine times and assisted on
seven goals for 16 points while Jennifer Friedman also has 16
points. Hers coming from one goal and 15 assists.
Genevieve Lacasse has played 28 games in net for the Friars;
securing a record of 11-15-2. She has a GAA of 2.08, a save
percentage of .930, and six shutouts. Nina Riley has played in six
games over the season. Her record stands at 3-1-2 with a GAA of
2.49 and a save percentage of .909.
