Black Bears Fall to Friars, 9-2

Providence, R.I. – The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell to Providence College on Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena by a score of 9-2. Katy Massey (Waterville, Maine) led the Black Bears in the contest as she notched a goal and an assist. The Black Bears fall to 4-18-3, 1-11-2 while the Friars improve 12-11-4, 6-6-2 in league play.

The Friars scored three unanswered goals in the first period to solidify a 3-0 lead. Nicole Anderson, Beth Hanrahan, and Rebecca Morse notched the three goals for Providence with Morse registering the eventual game-winner at 17:37 of the first period.

The Friars wasted little time in the second as Courtney Kukowski tallied the fourth goal of the game at 3:40 of the second period.

Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario) registered her fourth goal of the game at 9:10 of the second period. Massey notched her fourth assist of the game on the scoring opportunity while Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) registered her third.

The second period ended with a 4-1 Providence College lead.

Massey opened the third period with a quick score at 1:40. This marks Massey's fifth goal of the season as she tucked the puck away to bring the score to 4-2. Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) picked up her sixth assist of the season on the even scoring opportunity.

The Friars would end the game notching five unanswered goals by Micheletti, Morse, Illikainen, Pendleton, and Buie.

Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) got the start for the Black Bears between the pipes allowing seven goals while notching 25 saves. Ott sees her record fall to 4-11-3 on the season. Kylie Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) played in the final 6:27 of the game, allowing two goals while saving six.

The Black Bears return to action on February 2 as they host Boston College for their annual Skating Strides game. The puck is slated to drop at 7:00 PM. Maine will travel to Vermont the following weekend for a two game series against Vermont on Saturday and Sunday; puck is slated to drop at 2:00 PM for both contests.
