Black Bears Fall to Second-Ranked Eagles, 6-3
Orono, Maine – The Black Bears fell to second-ranked Boston College on Saturday evening by a score of 6-3. The Black Bears participated in the 7th annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer sponsored by FairPoint Communications. With the loss, Maine falls to 4-19-3, 1-12-2 in Hockey East while Boston College improves to 20-4-2, 13-2-1 in Hockey East.
The Black Bears and the Eagles skated to a 0-0 draw in the first period with Boston College holding the 14-3 shot advantage. After the first period, the Black Bears are 0-1 on the power play while the Eagles are 0-2. Kelsey MacSorley (Stratford, Ontario) picked up a holding penalty at 10:40 in the first and Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) got tagged with the hooking penalty at 16:57 after bringing a BC skater to the ground in what could have been a one on one opportunity for the Eagles.
The Black Bears took advantage of the power play opportunity that carried over from the first period. Shawna Lesperance (Belle River, Ontario) notched her third goal of the season just 21 seconds into the second period after Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Michigan) snapped a shot at the Eagle goalie. Lesperance was able to put the loose puck home after a scrum ensued in front of the crease. Dougherty registered her 18th assist of the season while Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) tallied her seventh.
The Eagles would go on to score four unanswered goals to end the second period with a 4-1 lead. Alex Carpenter got Boston College on the board at 2:57 on the power play opportunity and notched her second goal of the game at 5:22. Melissa Bizzari took advantage of the power play at 11:48 and Lexi Bender registered the final goal of the period at 14:44.
The Black Bears held a slight 11-8 shot advantage over the Eagles in the second period. Maine went 1-2 on the power play in the second while Boston College went 2-2.
Third period saw both teams registering two goals for a final score of 6-3.
Missy Denk (Poplar Grove, Illinois) picked up her second goal of the season at 7:45 of the period on a power play. Brittney Huneke (Hastings, Minnesota) took a shot from the top of the offensive zone but before the puck met the goalie, Denk was able to smack it out of the air to find the open five-hole. Huneke notched her second assist of the season.
The Eagles would register the next two goals off the sticks of Dru Burns and Kate Leary.
Lesperance notched her second goal of the game and fourth of the season with 34 seconds left in regulation on a power play opportunity. Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) tallied her fourth assist of the season while Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) picked up her seventh.
Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) saw her 12th loss of the season at the hands of the Eagles. Ott allowed six goals while posting 34 saves in the 6-3 loss. She now sits at 4-12-3 between the pipes for the Black Bears.
The Eagles held a 40-25 shot advantage over the Black Bears. Both teams went 3-5 on the power play opportunity.
Maine returns to action next weekend as it travels to Vermont for a two game series. The first game will take place on Saturday, February 9 at 2:00 PM followed by game two on Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 PM.
