Black Bears Fall to Catamounts 4-1

Burlinton, Vt. – The University of Maine women's ice hockey team lost a tough battle at Vermont on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-1. With the loss, the Black Bears fall to 5-20-3, 2-13-2 in Hockey East while Vermont improves to 8-17-3, 6-8-3 in Hockey East.

The Black Bears got on the board early as Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) found the back of the net at 2:21 of the first period. Browne registered her second goal as a Black Bear on the tip in goal. Chloe Tinkler (Wabush, Newfoundland) took a slap shot from the point after Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) passed her the puck. Browne was able to get a stick on the puck in front of the crease for the even strength goal.

The two teams played through a scoreless second period with Maine holding a 9-6 shot advantage of Vermont.

The third period was all Catamount action as Vermont notched four unanswered goals.

Kellie Dineen knotted the game at 1-1 just 4:19 into the third period. Dayna Colang registered the eventual game-winner on the 5 on 3 power play at 6:47 of the period. Emily Walsh pushed the score to 3-1 at 12:39 and Brittany Zuback notched the empty net goal at 18:52 for the final goal of the game.

Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) anchored the Black Bears between the pipes as she allowed four goals while saving 23 shots. Ott sees her record fall to 5-13-3 with the loss.

The Black Bears held a slight 28-27 shot advantage over the Catamounts. Vermont went 1 for 6 on the power play while Maine went 0 for 11.

Maine returns to action next weekend as it plays host to Northeastern on February 16 and 17 for the final home contest of the season. Both games are slated for a 2:00 PM start. The seniors will be recognized on Sunday afternoon before the start of the game.
