ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team will participate in the 8th Annual Hockey East Skating Strides game to fight breast cancer on Sunday Jan. 19th at 1pm.
The Black Bears will take on Providence College in a game to raise money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing right here in Maine. In preparation for the Skating Strides game the women's ice hockey team has been selling pink pucks at various UMaine sporting events leading up to the game. The women's team will be selling pink pucks at the Men's Skating Strides game on Tuesday Jan 14th.
To open this special event, Mary Dempsey, representing the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, will take part in the Ceremonial Puck Drop.
This year the women's ice hockey team will be playing on pink ice in addition to wearing pink jerseys to honor Breast Cancer awareness thanks to Fairpoint Communications, a proud sponsor of this event. The game worn pink jerseys will be auctioned off during the game with the bidding closing in the third period. Official Hockey East Skating Strides merchandise will be on sale during the game and all the proceeds from jerseys and merchandise will go to the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing.
Following the game there will be a post game autograph session on the concourse with the team.
