BOSTON, Mass.- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell to Northeastern 4-3 in overtime on Friday night in Boston, Mass. Sophomore goalie Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) made 34 saves for the Black Bears.
The Black Bears and the Huskies battled in the first period but neither team got on the board. Maine had seven shots on goal, while Northeastern had 12 opportunities on net.
Northeastern took a 1-0 lead at 7:19 into the second period when Maggie Brennolt put the puck in the net on a pass from Paige Savage.
Maine answered late in the second period when Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minn) scored her ninth goal of the season on a pass from Brittney Huenke (Hastings, Minn.) at 11:56 into the second period.
The Huskies outshot Maine 14 to 9 in the second period. Northeastern was 0-3 on the power play.
Both teams came out hot in the third period scoring two goals each. Maine struck first when Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario) scored an unassisted goal at 1:49 onto the third. The Huskies answered minutes later when Heather Mottau put one by Maine goalie Meghann Treacy at 5:32 on a power play.
Northeastern went into the box giving Maine an opportunity to strike back. Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) scored her first goal of the season on a power play with an assist from Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) at 9:47 into the period. The Huskies matched it minutes later when they scored a power play goal of their own. Brittany Esposito put the puck in the net for the Huskies on a pass from Mottau.
The period ends with both teams tied at 3 taking the game into overtime. Maine outshot the Huskies 12-11 in the third period.
The Black Bears battle in overtime but the Huskies came out on top when Kelly Wallace scored the game winning goal at 2:54. Maine had two shots on goal in overtime.
Treacy made 34 saves for the Black Bears while Chole Desjardins stopped 27.
Maine was out shot 38-30. Maine moves to a 3-15-5 on the season.
Maine continues the series with Northeastern Saturday at 3pm.
