Strong Start Propels Maine to a 4-1 Victory Over UConn
STORRS, Conn.- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team defeated the UConn Huskies 4-1 on Friday afternoon. Maine scored three goals in the first period. The Black Bears improve to a 6-19-5 record.
Maine was eager to claim a win to wrap up the regular season as the Black Bears traveled to play the Huskies in a two game series.
The Black Bears opened with a strong start in the game when they succeeded on the power play. Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minn.) found Kristin Gilmour (Millgrove, Ontario) for the first goal of the game at 7:25 into the first.
Maine wasn't done. The Black Bears took a 3-0 lead in the first period when Brooklyn Langlois (Steinbach, Manitoba) drove the puck in the net on a pass from Karissa Kirkup (Virden, Manitoba) at 15:55 into the first.
Maine had 17 shots on net in the first period while the Huskies had nine.
The Black Bears continued their aggressive play in the second period. Maine converted on the power play when Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario) scored her seventh goal of the season on a pass from Gilmour at 12:52 into the period.
The second period finished with Maine on top 4-0.
UConn. outshot Maine 12 to 10 in the second period.
The Huskies got on the board early in third period when Sarah MacDonnell found Michela Cava who notched a goal ay 4:03 into the third.
The Huskies managed to keep Maine scoreless in the third period, but Maine limited the Huskies to only one goal in the period.
Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) made 31 saves while Chuli stopped 30.
Maine takes on UConn for game two of the series Saturday at 2pm.
