Pam Patterson Named Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete

June 5, 2008

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- University of Maine women's ice hockey assistant captain Pam Patterson (Miramichi, New Brunswick) earned the Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete Award for the second year in a row. She was one of 11 Black Bears named to the Women's Hockey East All-Academic Team announced today.

Boston College and Vermont each had 13 student-athletes named to the WHEA All-Academic Team, while New Hampshire and Northeastern each had 12. Maine placed 11 student-athletes on the team, while Boston University and UConn each had seven skaters named to the squad. Providence has six athletes honored.

The league also recognized four student-athletes, including Maine's Kim Meagher (Hampden, Maine) as "Distinguished Scholars," having achieved at least a 3.0 GPA in every semester of their Hockey East careers.

Patterson earned a spot on the Hockey East Academic All-Star Team, which honors the student-athletes with the top grade point averages by position. It is the third year in a row that she has been named to the Hockey East Academic All-Star team.

Meagher was a four-time all-academic team selection, while Patterson, who played her freshman season at Ohio State, and Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) were honored for the third time in their careers. Abby Barton (Woodstock, New Brunswick), Jenna Ouellette (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.) and Vanessa Vani (Mississauga, Ontario) were all honored for the second time in their careers. Jenna Cowan (Hartney, Manitoba), Danielle Cyr (Cumberland, Maine), Madelene Ericksson (Skovde, Sweden) and Jennie Gallo (Castlegar, British Columbia) all received honors for the first time.

Hockey East placed 81 student-athletes on the all-academic team. To qualify for the team, a student-athlete must achieve a grade-point-average of at least a 3.0 in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing.
