Black Bears Victorious, Clinch Playoff Berth

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine women's soccer team clinched a playoff berth with a 2-1 decision over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears improve to 7-6-2 (3-3-1) with the win despite rainy conditions. The Wildcats fall to 5-9-2 (3-2-1) on the season.

New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead at 20:17 of the first half after Kirstyn Corder slipped a shot past the Black Bear keeper for the goal. Kristi Zarrilli and Monique Lamotte would notch the assist for the Wildcats.

Maine held a 7-3 shot advantage over New Hampshire after the first half.

The second half saw all Black Bear scoring. Lisa Bijman (Brantford, Ontario) would net a 40-yard strike 67:11, as the Wildcat keeper was unable to come up with the save. Maddie Hill (Brampton, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal at 72:01 as she took a direct kick from Bijman.

The Black Bears were able to hold the Wildcats to just two shots in the second half as the defense stepped up big during the last 15 minutes of the match.

Meagan Price-Leibenzeder (Surrey, British Columbia) anchored the defense in goal as she picked up her first win of the year, posting four saves while allowing one goal against. Her record improves to 1-2-0 on the season.

Erica Correa was the keeper for New Hampshire as her record fell to 5-8-2 with two goals against and eight saves.

The Black Bears held a 17-5 shot advantage as well as a 5-3 corner kick edge.

Maine returns to action on October 18 when it hosts Albany for the final regular season game of the 2012-13 campaign. This game will be senior day where we will honor Maddie Hill and Meagan Price-Leibenzeder. Game time is slated for 3:00 PM.
