Women's Soccer Selected Third in America East Preseason Poll
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's soccer team has been selected third in the 2013 America East Preseason Poll, released on Thursday, August 15. The Black Bears received 49 points in the poll. Maine finished third in the 2012 regular season standings, but received the second seed in the America East Tournament.
Hartford was selected by the league coaches to win the 2013 title, as the Hawks received five first-place votes and 61 points overall. Stony Brook followed closely, receiving four first-place votes and 59 points overall. Following Maine was Vermont, who received 38 points. New Hampshire was fifth with 35 points followed by Albany (29 points), Binghamton (28 points), UMBC (15 points). America East newcomer, UMass Lowell, was selected ninth as it received eight points.
Captains Maggie Malone (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Lisa Bijman (Brantford, Ontario) lead a team that lost just two letterwinners from a year ago. The Black Bears return 16 letters winners for the 2013 season, including eight of the top nine scorers from a year ago.
Charlene Achille (Longueuil, Quebec), the reigning America East Rookie of the Year and America East Second Team selection, returns to the midfield for the Black Bears. She scored seven points on two goals and three assists. Achille also earned a spot on the 2012 NCAA DI Women's All-Northeast Region Third Team. Achille, along with classmate Noel Leon-Palmer (Ajax, Ontario), were both selected to the America East All-Rookie Team.
Also among those returning are Nikki Misener (Burlington, Ontario), who finished with five goals and three assists for 15 points to lead the team in scoring. Jordan Pellerin (Waterville, Maine) added three goals and an assist for seven points. Eve L'Abbe (Laval, Quebec) tallied two goals and three assists for seven points as well.
Also returning is keeper Lauren Swant (Oakville, Ontario), who played in 13 games a year ago in her rookie campaign. She finished 6-4-2 with a 1.36 goals against average and a .761 save percentage. Swant recorded three shutouts.
Maine adds six newcomers for the 2013 season.
Maine kicks off the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 23 when they host Holy Cross at 4 PM in Portland, Maine. The game will be played at Deering High School. The Black Bears host Central Connecticut on Tuesday, Aug. 27 in their home opener at Alumni Field in Orono.
