STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Wagner on Sunday afternoon in Staten Island, N.Y. The Black Bears move to 3-1-1 on the season with the tie, while Wagner now sports a mark of 4-0-1.
After a scoreless first half, Maine stuck first with a goal at 61:06. Jordan Pellerin (Waterville, Maine) crossed the ball to Camille Varin-Tremblay (St Hubert, Quebec). Her shot found the upper right hand corner of the net, beating diving Seahawk keeper Katie Marcy. For Varin-Tremblay, it was her second goal of the season.
Wagner, however, tied the game at 1-1 just over eight minutes later. After a Seahawks corner kick, Jackie Nicholas gained control of a ball in the box and beat Maine keeper Lauren Swant (Oakville, Ontario).
Neither team was able to score during the remainder of regulation or during either of the two overtime periods and the game finished in a 1-1 draw.
Wagner finished the game with an 18-11 edge in shots on goal.
Maine keeper Swant made four saves in goal. She moves to 3-1-1 on the season. Marcy stopped one shot for Wagner and moves to 4-0-1.
Maine returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13 when it travels to Virginia Commonwealth. Kick-off is slated to 7:30 PM.
