ORONO, Maine -- Charlene Achille (Longueuil, Quebec) scored on a direct kick at 82:22 to lead the University of Maine women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac in the season-opener on Friday afternoon, in a game played on Mahaney Diamond. It marks the second straight season that the Black Bears have been victorious in their first game of the year.
The first half of the game was equally played, with neither team having a distinct advantage in possession. Both teams had a couple of great chances early in the second half, with each keeper, Maine's Claudia Dube-Trempe (Chambly, Quebec) and Quinnipiac's Natalia Grodzki, coming up big to keep the game a scoreless tie.
With less than 10 minutes to play in regularion, Maine was awarded a direct kick just outside the penalty box. Achille rocketed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal, past Quinnipiac keeper Grodzki.
The goal proved to be the game-winner as the Black Bears earned the 1-0 win.
Quinnipiac outshot Maine 11-7 in the game, however, the Black Bears had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Dube-Trempe made three saves in goal to record the shutout. Grodzki made a pair of save for the Bobcats.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 24 when it hosts Bryant at 1 PM on Mahaney Diamond.
