Women's Soccer Announces Incoming Recruiting Class

April 1, 2008

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine women's soccer head coach Scott Atherley announced on Tuesday that Ashley Drenth, Alexandra Krous, Kaitlyn MacIsaac, Carolyne Nellis and Sady Tobin have signed national letters of intent to continue their careers at the school. Nellis began taking classes at the University this past January, while Drenth, Krous, MacIsaac and Tobin will attend school beginning in the fall of 2008.

"Adding these players to our program and line-up will assure that we are once again among the most physically challenging teams to play against," Atherley said. "In addition to the great athletic qualities that these young women possess, they are talented, versatile and driven."

Drenth, a 5-10 defender from Washingtonville, N.Y., is a product of the national power Quickstrike FC. This past summer she helped lead her squad to the 2007 United Soccer League U-20 North American Championship game. She was one of the leaders on the team, which included U.S. Olympian Brittany Taylor and Amanda DaCosta (2007 National Collegiate Freshman of the Year). As a five-year member of the Washingtonville H.S. varsity soccer team, Drenth helped lead her team to a pair of New York Sectional championships. She was a three-time Times-Herald selection, and in 2006 was a New York State Sports Writers Association Class AA All-State selection.

"Ashley is a big, strong central defender who will add a physical dimension to our team," Atherley said. She has an imposing presence, and personality to match. She will fit nicely into our system. She is fast, physical and fearless. She reminds me a great deal of Linda Consolante."

Krous, a 5-10 midfielder/forward from Yakima, Wash., led Walla Walla Community College to two-consecutive NWAACC championships. At Walla Walla, Krous was a two-time All-NWAACC selection registering 35 goals, 25 assists (95 points) from midfield.

"Alli is a gifted athlete who can unsettle a defense because of her speed," Atherley said. "She can play up front or in the midfield. Her technical ability combined with her physical gifts will enable her to have an impact for us in a variety of positions. The fact that she is coming to us as a junior will give us added experience and leadership."

MacIsaac, a 5-2 midfielder/defender from Bedford, Nova Scotia, has been a member of the Nova Scotia Provincial, and Canadian National Training Center programs for the past four years. She is also a member of the Canadian U-20 National Pool. MacIsaac most recently played for former U.S. Women's National Team coach Tony Dicicco and the Connecticut Red's. This past summer she helped the Red's capture the 2007 USL U-23 National Championship. MacIsaac comes from a family rich in athletic talent. Her sister was a standout player for the University of Connecticut, and her brother has been tabbed as one of the top amateur hockey prospects in Canada.

"Kaitlyn is a phenomenal athlete, and her work ethic rivals her qualities as an athlete and player," Atherley said. "She is extremely versatile, and can play a variety of positions with equal prowess. She is strong technically, and can score goals from outside the box. She will add intensity to our line-up".

Nellis, a 5-9 forward from Quebec City, Quebec, is a product of the same CEGEP that produced former Maine greats Marie-Michele Bouchard and Marie-Andree Canuel. She was one of 11 players across Canada selected to the 2007 Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian Team for her effort in leading F.X. Garneau in scoring, and to the 2007 National College Championship. Nellis also led her club team, F.C. Dynamo, to a bronze medal at the 2007 Canadian National Championships, where she led all tournament participants in scoring.

"Carolyne is a goal scorer," Athlerley said. "She possesses an innate calmness that is essential in her role as a finisher. She has exceptional speed and quickness, and possesses a sixth sense around the goal. Her anticipation, timing and composure in the box make her a very dangerous player."

Tobin, a 5-9 defender from Paul Smiths, N.Y., is a product of perennial national powers Oakwood Soccer Club and the Loomis-Chaffee School. Tobin helped lead Loomis to the 2006 Western New England Prep School Soccer Association Championship, and 2007 WNEPSSA championship game while playing for former Maine great, Heather Hathorn. For her efforts, she was selected to the 2007 WNEPSSA All-Star, and Connecticut H.S. Soccer Coaches Association All-State teams.

"Sady is a great athlete," Atherley said. "She possesses outstanding speed and size, and she has tremendous potential to grow as a player. She has a great work ethic and she is very competitive. She has all of the ingredients coaches love to work with, and I anticipate that she will prosper as a player in our program."

All National Letters of Intent signings are contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
