Softball Falls to UC Riverside in Eight Innings, 4-3
RIVERSIDE, Calif.--The University of Maine softball team fell to UC Riverside this evening by a score of 4-3. The loss puts Maines' record at 4-9 on the season while the Highlanders improve to 6-10. Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) led the Black Bears in hitting, going 2-for-3 with a homerun.
Maine jumped on the board first as Hilary Kane led off the fourth inning with a homerun to left center field. It is her first homer of the season.
The Highlanders tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Alexis Pickett singled to right center, scoring Brittany Keeney on the play. Keeney got aboard on a one-out walk.
Maine regained the lead in the eighth inning after Dagmar Ralphs (O'Fallon, Ill.) was placed on second to start the inning and came around to score after EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) singled up the middle. The RBI gives Fogel four on the year. Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) drove in her first RBI of the season for Maine after she singled to left; scoring Fogel. The Black Bears now had a 3-2 lead.
Kaylie Atkinson tied the game up for UC Riverside after hitting a two run homerun with two outs in the eighth. Jordyn McDonald won the game for the Highlanders after hitting a walk-off double to right center, driving in Alexis Pickett for a 4-3 win. Pickett had reached prior to McDonalds' at bat on an error.
Ashley Kelley (Hermon, Maine) pitched a complete game for the Black Bears, giving up seven hits and four runs, two of which were earned. She also walked three and struckout one batter. Kelley's record now stands at 2-3 on the season. Jordyn McDonald earned the win for Riverside after pitching three innings, surrendering four hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. Her record improves to 4-5 on the year. Taylor Alvarez started the game, throwing five innings and giving up one earned run while striking out seven and walking six.
The Black Bears will take on Portland State tomorrow at Noon.
