Black Bears Drop 2-0 Decision to UC-Davis
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The Black Bears kept things close but could not manage to get over the hump, dropping their finale at the Riverside Invitational 2-0 to UC-Davis. Junior Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) went 2-for-2 to lead the Maine offense while starter Ashley Kelley (Hermon, Maine) kept the game in touch as she went the distance while giving up just two runs. Maine falls to 4-10 with the loss while the Aggies improve to 6-13.
Kelley and the Black Bear defense worked out of a tough jam in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third and only one out, Kelley was able to pick up a big strikeout. After a walk loaded the bases, Kelley got getting Savannah Smith to ground out, ending the inning and the threat.
The Aggies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when JJ Wagoner's one-out double down the left field line plated Allison Smith from second.
Maine posed a threat in the bottom of the fourth as Kane worked a lead-off walk. Stephanie Wood (Florence, N.J.) pinch ran for Kane an advanced to second after a sac-bunt from Jennifer Eberhardt (Glendale, Ariz.). However, Aggie starter Justine Vela struck out the next two Maine hitters to escape another jam.
UC-Davis extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh. Megan Guzman reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. Guzman advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on a single by Rachel Miller.
Maine continued to battle but failed to plate a run, dropping the contest 2-0 to the Aggies.
Kelley turned in seven innings in the circle for the Black Bears, scattering 10 hits while giving up two runs with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.
Vela gets the complete game shutout victory as she gave up three hits with 13 strikeouts.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 6 when they travel to battle San Diego State at 9 pm EST.
