Softball Falls to UConn 8-0

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Maine softball team (5-19) fell in game one on day two of the Hofstra Invitational to UConn (6-9) in five-innings by a score of 8-0. Dagmar Ralphs (O'Fallon, Ill.), Lindsey Jenkins (Greenwich, Conn.) and Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) all recorded hits for the Black Bears.

For the second day in a row, the Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Emily O'Donnell started the scoring as she drove in Jennifer Ward as the two led off the game with back-to-back doubles. Two batters later, Amy Vaughn sent a two-run homer over the right field fence to give UConn an early 3-0 advantage.

UConn added five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away. Marissa Guches single to short plated Ward before Brittany Duclos followed by reaching on an error that allowed both Guches and O'Donnell to come around and score. After the Black Bears recorded the first out of the inning on a groundout, Silva sent a one-out single up the middle, scoring Duclos and Vaughn on the play. The runs were the seventh and eighth of the game for the Huskies, giving them the 8-0 run-rule win.

Ashley Kelley (Hermon, Maine) takes the loss for Maine as the senior went 4.1 innings while giving up eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with one walk while fanning a season-high six.

Maine returns to action at 12 PM as it closes out its action at the Hofstra Invitational with a matchup against the host Hofstra Pride.
