Softball Drops Conference Opener to Albany 5-0
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine softball team was defeated in game one of today's doubleheader at Albany by a score of 5-0. The loss slips Maine back to 6-19 and 0-1 in league play while the Great Danes improve to 16-7 and 3-1 in America East play. Jennifer Eberhardt (Glendale, Ariz.) led the Maine offense with a 2-for-3 showing while Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) went 1-for-3 with a double.
The Great Danes began the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Charlise Castro scored the first run of the day as she was driven in on a single up the middle by Melissa Herndon. Alex Toole then plated two runs with a double into left field to give Albany an early 3-0 advantage.
Albany added a run in the bottom of the third when Lauren Alcorn grounded out to third but Taylor Franich was able to score on the play.
Kylie Apostolina's lead off homer to center in the bottom of the fourth gave the Great Danes their fifth and final run of the contest. Albany would hang on the rest of the way as the Black Bears failed to get anything going.
Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) took the loss in the circle for Maine as she falls to 2-7 on the season. Sparks went six innings while giving up five runs on seven hits while fanning five and walking one.
Brittany MacFawn improves to 8-3 on the year as she went the distance in picking up the complete game shutout victory as she scattered five hits while striking out 10.
