W. HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Maine softball team (17-28-1, 8-9-1 America East) fell in its regular season finale at Hartford (10-41, 4-14 AE) by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Lindsey Jenkins (Greenwich, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Stephanie Wood (Florence, N.J.) was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
Hartford began the scoring in the home half of the second Erica Phelps drove in Melani Maxwell with an RBI double to left field.
The Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 when they added a run in the bottom of the third. Amber Andrews started the rally with a one out double to right center before being driven in by Kate Wacyk's double.
The Black Bears got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Jennifer Eberhardt (Glendale, Ariz.) got things going by reaching on a fielder's choice. With one away in the inning, Hilary Kane's (Concord, N.H.) single into right advanced Eberhardt to third. Eberhardt would later score on a sac-fly into left field from Dagmar Ralphs (O'Fallon, Ill.).
Hartford answered by playing a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Jordan Haines started the inning with a triple to the gap in right center before scoring on a single into left from Jackie Kelly. Kelly then moved up to second on a wild pitch and later advanced to third on a single from Maxwell to short. Margaret Betz then ripped a single to third, allowing Kelly to score the fourth Hartford run of the day.
Maine kept battling and looked to tie things up in the top of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Emily Lenor (Bucksport, Maine) worked a walk and later moved to second on a single to third from Wood. Nikki Byron (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) then reached on a fielder's choice which erased Lenor at third. Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) followed by reaching on an error, allowing Wood to score from third and moving Byron up to third. Jenkins then belted a single into center, scoring Byron and bring the Black Bears within a run. However, Hartford was able to retire the last out of the contest and maintain the lead, taking the victory 4-3.
Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) takes the loss for Maine as she falls to 5-9 after going six innings while giving up four runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Siera Sheehan moves to 9-16 with the complete game victory after giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks.
The Black Bears will now travel to take part in the America East Tournament beginning on Thursday, May 10th.
