Softball Drops 5-1 Decision to USC Upstate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The University of Maine softball team (1-2) dropped game two of its opening weekend doubleheader to S.C. Upstate late Saturday afternoon. Katlin Norton (South Portland, Maine) went 1-for-3 and scored the lone Maine run to lead the Black Bear attack.
Maine had an early lead for the third-straight game as it plated a run in the top of the second. Norton began the inning with a lead off single up the middle before advancing to second on a sac-bunt from Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine). Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) dropped a single into left to advance Norton to third. Norton would later score the games first run on a wild pitch.
The Spartans grabbed a four run lead in the bottom of the second as they would plate five runs on six hits in the inning.
Maine kept the Spartans off the scoreboard the rest of the way but were unable to score themselves, dropping the contest 5-1.
Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) went the distance in the circle for the Black Bears as she tossed six innings while fiving up five runs on eight hits with one strikeout and four walks.
Anna Miller picked up the win for USC Upstate after tossing five innings while giving up one run on five hits with six strikeouts.
The Black Bears close out the Subway Upstate Classic tomorrow as they meet UMKC at 10 AM.
