Softball Falls to UMKC, 9-3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The University of Maine softball team (1-3) closed out the Subway Upstate Classic with a 9-3 loss to UMKC on Sunday morning. Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) led Maine with a pair of hits and a run scored while Nikki Byron (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) added a pair of hits and a RBI. For her efforts, Koslosky was named to the Subway Upstate Classic All-Tournament team.

For the fourth-straight game the Black Bears jumped out to an early lead as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the first. Koslosky continued her hot hitting as she led off the game with a double down the left field line. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) followed with a bunt single to second, allowing Koslosky to move to third, giving Maine runners on the corners with nobody out. Koslosky scored the game's first run when she was able to score on a wild pitch which allowed Fogel to advance to second. Fogel later moved up to third on another wild pitch before later scoring on Byron's single into centerfield.

The Kangaroos took a 4-2 lead when they plated four runs in the bottom of the third. Marlee Maples drove in the first UMKC run of the day with an RBI double before Emily Ott's single plated Maples. Two more Kangaroo runs in the inning gave UMKC a two-run advantage.

UMKC added to its lead with a four-run bottom of the fourth, extending its lead to 8-2. Maples would score again in the bottom of the fifth to give the Kangaroos a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Maine kept charging as it would add a run in the top of the seventh. Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) began the one-out Maine rally with a double into center. Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) followed with a RBI double to right, scoring Hill. But that would be as close as Maine would get, dropping the game 9-3 to the Kangaroos.

Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) takes the loss for Maine after going three innings while giving up seven runs, four earned, on seven hits with one strikeout. Hill pitched three innings in relief for Maine as she gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Black Bears return to action on March 1 at 11 AM against Stephen F. Austin in game one of the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
