Softball Shutout at Florida Gulf Coast
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Maine softball team closed out the USF Under Armour Invitational with an 8-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast Sunday afternoon. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) and Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) each recorded a hit for the Black Bears who fall to 1-8 on the year while the Eagles improve to 12-5.
Florida Gulf Coast opened up the game with back-to-back four run innings, plating four runs in the first and second innings. Chelsea Zgrabik started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle for the Eagles. Mariah Fernandez kept the rally alive by drawing a bases loaded walk. The Eagles' next run came in on a wild pitch before Brittney Garabedian's sac fly plated the fourth run of the bottom of the first.
Zgrabik's grand slam in the home half of the second extended the Eagles' lead to 8-0.
Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) takes the loss for the Black Bears as she went 1.1 innings while giving up six runs on one five and five walks while striking out three. Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) pitched 1.2 innings in relief while giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts. Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) threw the final inning for the Black Bears, giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Maine returns to action on Monday, March 4 when it meets Western Michigan at 11 AM.
