Stevens Homers but Softball Falls to BYU, 3-2

TAMPA, Fla. -- Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) ripped a two run homer to deep center field, tying the score at 2-2. However, Brigham Young would plate a run in the top of the seventh and hold on as the University of Maine softball team fell by thet score of 3-2 in game two on Thursday to BYU.

The Cougers opened the scoring in the top of the third. JC Clayton started the scoring when her double into left field plated Bailie Hicken. Katie Manuma kept the rally alive with an RBI single to center field, plating Clayton, and giving BYU a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.

Maine answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) began the rally with a one-out walk. Stevens followed by belting her third home run of the season to tie the score at 2-2.

BYU responded in the top of the seventh when Marissa Bravo's double to left score Clayton with the go ahead run.

Maine looked to rally and tie the game in the home half of the seventh as Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) reached with a single to left. But Maine failed to drive her in as the Black Bears dropped the contest 3-2.

EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) and Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) each had a pair of hits to lead the Black Bear offense.

Hill went the distance for Maine in the circle while giving up three runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts. Manuma pitched the first 5.1 innings for the Cougers as she gave up two runs on four hits with one strikeout. Carly Duckworth picked up the win for BYU in relief as she tossed 1.2 innings while giving up two hits and striking out a pair.

Maine continues play tomorrow when it meets Tennessee Tech at 2:30 PM followed by a matchup with Youngstown State at 4:45 PM.
