Softball Falls in Game One to BYU
TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Maine softball team dropped a tight 6-4 decision to Brigham Young University on Thursday afternoon. The loss slips Maine back to 1-12 on the season while the Cougars improve to 8-13. Stephanie Wood (Florence, N.J.) paced the Maine attack with a 3-for-3 showing and a run scored while Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) added a home run and three RBI.
The Cougars started the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the first. Maine would answer in the top of the second as it plated a single run, knotting the score at 1-1. Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) began the Maine inning with a double to the right center gap. Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) followed with a one out double to score Kane.
Jenna Goar led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to give BYU a 2-1 lead.
Maine would once again answer as it plated a run in the top of the third. Wood led off with a single up the middle before EmJ Fogel's (Vienna, Va.) single to right center gave Maine runners on first and second with no outs. Fogel and Wood would each swipe bases, moving them up to second and third respectively, before Wood scored on a Burk ground out to second.
The Cougars extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Black Bears once again had an answer as they would come back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) began the inning with a double into left center. Burk followed with her first home run of the season, cutting the Cougar lead to just one.
BYU would tack on a single run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Maine kept the pressure on but would fall short in the end, dropping the contest by a score of 6-4.
Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) takes the loss for Maine as she went 4.1 innings while giving up six runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk. Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) pitched the final 1.2 innings for Maine while giving up no runs and no hits with one strikeout.
Maine and BYU meet in game two of today's doubleheader later on this afternoon.
