Softball Clipped by Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Maine softball team fell in a tight 3-2 decision at Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday afternoon. Maine saw the tying run reach on the top of the seventh but was unable to drive the run in. Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) went 1-for-3 with a run scored while Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) was 1-for-2 at the plate with a RBI.
Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of the first. Burk began the rally by reaching on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on a Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) single to right field. Back-to-back two out walks from Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) and Hill allowed Burk to score from third.
The Eagles added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead into the top of the sixth where Maine would answer.
Kane began the sixth for Maine by reaching on an error before pinch runner Lydia O'Connor (Newton, Mass.) entered for Kane. Hill's single down the left field line advance O'Connor to second before each moved up a base on a wild pitch. Stephanie Wood (Florence, N.J.) put the ball in play next and reached on an error which allowed O'Connor to score from third, bringing Maine within one.
The game would move into the top of the seventh with the Eagles leading 3-2. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Burk's single to right field moved the tying run up to second with nobody out. However, the Eagles would get the next three Maine batters to escape with a 3-2 win.
Hill picks up the loss in the circle for Maine as she went six innings while giving up three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
The Black Bears return to the diamond on Friday when they meet Quinnipiac at 11 AM and Rhode Island at 1:15 PM.
