ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine softball team dropped a pair of games on its home opening weekend to Albany on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears fell in game one 5-2 before dropping game two by the score of 8-4. Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) went 2-for-3 with a home run in game one while EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) led the way in game two with a pair of hits and two RBI.
In game one, Albany opened the scoring early with three runs in the top of the first before tacking on a pair in the top of the second. Charlise Castro started the scoring with a RBI single to right field before Kelly Costello drove in the third run of the inning with a single to center.
Vicky McFarland plated two more Great Dane runs in the top of the second with a two-run homer to right field.
Maine got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Katlin Norton (South Portland, Maine) dropped a single just over third base, bringing Hill in from third.
Hill continued her solid day at the plate when she belted her second home run of the season with a laser over the right field wall. However that would be all the scoring for the Black Bears as Albany took game one 5-2.
Hill was solid in the circle for the Black Bears as she went the distance while giving up five runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts. Brittany MacFawn picked up the win for Albany as she tossed seven innings while giving up two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.
In game two, the Great Danes again got off to a quick start with five first inning runs to take an early 5-0 lead.
Maine answered with a single run in the bottom of the first. Makaila Kowalsky (Colchester, Conn.) began the rally with a lead off double down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground out from Fogel. Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) followed with a line drive single over the center fielder's head, plating Kowalsky.
Albany would stretch its lead to 7-1 with two more runs in the top of the second before the Black Bears once again answered in the home half of the inning. Stephanie Wood (Florence, N.J.) began the rally with a one out bloop double down the left field line. Back to back walks from Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) and Kowalsky loaded the bases before Fogel singled up the middle, scoring Wood and Koslosky.
The Great Danes plated a run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from Lauren Alcorn. Maine would also tack on a single run in the fifth when Hilary Kane's (Concord, N.H.) double scored Fogel. However, that would be all Maine would get as Albany hung on for the 8-4 win.
Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) takes the loss for Maine as she went one innings while giving up seven runs, five earned, on six hits. Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) tossed six innings in relief, giving up just one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Maine and Albany will close out the season series on Monday. Game time is slated for 1 PM.
