BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine softball squad (7-37, 3-12 America East) jumped out to an early lead on Sunday afternoon at Boston University (19-23-1, 7-6 AE) but could not hold on as it dropped the series finale to the Terriers 7-1. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) paced Maine going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.) recorded a pair of doubles.
Maine began the scoring early as it plated a run in the top of the first. Fogel led off the game with a double to the gap in left center before moving over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.). Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) followed with a deep sacrifice fly to center which allowed Fogel to tag and score from third, giving the Black Bears a 1-0 edge.
Boston University would grab the lead with a three-run bottom of the second on RBI hits from Jayme Mask and Brittany Clendenny and a sac-bunt RBI by Emily Felbaum.
The Terriers extended their lead to 6-1 with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth powered by a two-RBI double from Megan Volpano. Maine kept fighting but a solo home run by Volpano in the bottom of the sixth pushed the lead to 7-1, a lead the Terriers would not relinquish.
Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) takes the loss for Maine after going two innings while giving up three runs on six hits. Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) went 1.1 innings in relief while giving up three runs on six hits while fanning two. Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) closed out the final 2.2 innings in the circle, giving up one run on one hit with a strikeout.
Maine closes out the 2013 regular season as it hosts Hartford for a three-game set beginning on May 4 with a doubleheader scheduled for 12 PM.
