CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The University of Maine softball team improved to 5-5 on the season and picked up its second-straight victory after defeating Cleveland St. 2-1 on Monday afternoon. Freshmen Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine) and Maddie Moore (McLean, Va.) each knocked in a run for the Black Bears while EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) added two hits.
Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) paved the way to the victory in the circle as she went the distance while giving up one run on four hits while fanning four to move to 2-2 on the season.
The Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Nena Doran's two-out walk gave Cleveland State runners on first and second before Janessa Rivera Keahi came around to score on Cynthia Woodard's single.
Maine answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. With two away in the inning, Fogel sliced a double before scoring on Obert's single. Obert, who moved to second on the throw in trying to catch Fogel, later scored on Moore's single to give the Black Bears a 2-1 edge.
Sparks and the Maine defense shut the door the rest of the way, scattering just two-hits the rest of the way to lock up a 2-1 victory.
Maine has Tuesday off before returning with a single game against the Netherlands on Wednesday, March 12 at 5 PM.
