Bogdanovich, Burk Lead Softball to Third-Straight Victory
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) tossed a shutout while Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) belted her first home run of the spring as the University of Maine softball team (6-5) defeated Penn 2-0 on Thursday afternoon. The victory was the third-straight for the Black Bears.
Freshman Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) went 2-for-3 as the Black Bears picked up their five win in their last six games.
Alexis Bogdanovich tossed the complete game shutout as she gave up just three hits while fanning four to move to 2-1 on the season.
Burk started the scoring in the top of the fourth as she belted her first home run of the spring, a one-out shot to left field, putting the Black Bears on top 1-0.
The Black Bears tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine) began the rally with a one out single before advancing to third on a base hit from Dagmar Ralphs (O'Fallon, Ill.). Obert would come in to score on a wild pitch, stretching Maine's lead to 2-0. The Black Bears shut Penn down in its half of the seventh, sealing the 2-0 victory.
Maine returns to action on Friday with doubleheader action. The Black Bears begin the day with a 9:30 AM start against Miami (Ohio) before taking on former America East foe Boston University at 11:45.
