Softball Takes Season Series at Hartford with 12-9 Victory

W. HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Maine softball team (10-9, 2-1 America East) used a fierce offensive attack, totaling 12 runs and 13 hits, to take the season series at Hartford by a score of 12-9 on Sunday afternoon. Five Black Bears produced two hits as freshmen Rachel Harvey (Southington, Conn.) and Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine) each produced a pair of hits with four RBI.

Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) contributed two hits, two runs and a pair of RBI while Samantha Ralphs (Lebanon, Ill.) scored four times in the win.

Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) picked up the win for the Black Bears in relief as she went 3.2 innings while giving up five runs, two earned, on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) started in the circle as she went 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Hartford started the scoring as it was able to push across a run in the bottom of the first. Amber Andrew began the inning with a single down the right field line before scoring on a fielder's choice from Sawyer Fried.

Maine answered immediately with a run in the top of the second. Fogel began the rally with a double to lead-off the inning before advancing to third on an error and later scoring on a bunt single by Obert.

The Black Bears took the lead in the top of the third. With runners on first and second and one out, Burk  stroked a single right back up the middle. Samantha Ralphs was able to come around from second on the hit to give Maine a 2-1 advantage.

Hartford knotted the score on Mackenzie Obert's one out RBI single. The Hawks added to their lead with a four-run bottom of the fourth, stretching their lead out to 6-2.

Maine answered with a four run output of its own, plating four runs to once again tie the game in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Harvey ripped a double, scoring Dagmar and Samantha Ralphs. Obert followed with a single to center which brought in Fogel and Harvey with the tying runs. Obert, who hit forced Hartford into a pitching change, moved herself into scoring position on the play.

The Black Bears regained the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth. Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) led off the inning with a triple to center field before scoring on Samantha Ralphs' double to the gap in right center. Maine added to its lead when Burk's single up the middle plated Samantha Ralphs, extending the lead to 8-6. The Black Bears kept the offensive pressure on as Obert reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, allowing Burk to score Maine's ninth run. The Black Bears completed their four-run rally when Maddie Moore (McLean, Va.) drew a bases loaded walk, plating Fogel with Maine's tenth run.

After shutting down Hartford in the bottom of the sixth, Maine's offense went back to work in the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Harvey dropped a single into right which brought both Samantha Ralphs and Burk around to score Maine's 11th and 12th runs of the afternoon.

The Hawks would get three back in the home half of the seventh but it would be too little too late as the Black Bears picked up the 12-9 America East league victory.

Maine returns to America East action when it hosts UMass Lowell for a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29 at 1 PM and concluding with a single game on Sunday, March 30 at 1 PM.
