Softball Winning Streak Snapped in 4-0 Decision at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine (12-10, 4-2 America East) softball team's four game winning streak came to a halt as it dropped a 4-0 decision at Albany (12-7, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon. Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) tallied a hit and a stolen base for the Black Bears while EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) added a hit.
The Black Bears were out hit 9-2 in the loss, being held to under 10 runs for the first time in two games.
Neither team was able to get their offense moving in the opening three innings before the Great Danes broke the scoreless tie on Charlise Castro's two-run home run.
Maine looked to close the gap with a threat in the top of the fifth. Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine) reached on an error, and advanced to second on the play, to start the inning before moving up to third after Maddie Moore (McLean, Va.) reached following Albany's catcher mishandeling a third-strike. However, the Albany defense would stand, holding the Black Bears to no runs in the inning.
Vicky McFarland extended the Albany lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth before the Great Danes added a run when Elizabeth Snow reached on an error, scoring Kelly Costello.
Albany starter Brittany MacFawn kept the Black Bears off the scoreboard the rest of the way to seal the 4-0 league victory.
Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) fell to 3-4 on the season as she gave up four runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Maine and Albany close out its season series on Sunday with a doubleheader slated to start at 11 a.m.
