Softball Splits Doubleheader at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine softball team (13-11, 5-3 America East) split its doubleheader at Albany (12-7, 3-3 AE), winning game one 3-0 in 9-innings before falling in game two by a score of 6-4. Maine's victory in game one snapped a 12-game losing streak with the Great Danes.
Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) toss nine innings of shutout ball with 11 strikeouts to capture the game one victory. Samantha Ralphs (Lebanon, Ill.) finished the day 4-6 with an RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) and Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) each recorded three hits in game two with Burk adding a pair of RBI.
In game one, Hill and the Maine defense kept the Great Danes off the board as the game entered the ninth in a scoreless tie. The Black Bears went to work on offense in the top of the ninth as EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) worked a leadoff walk before advancing on a base-hit bunt from Shelby Obert (Skowhegan, Maine). Rachel Harvey (Southington, Conn.) followed by reaching on an error which brought in Fogel with the game's first run. Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) kept the rally alive as her double plated Obert before a bunt single from Samantha Ralphs scored Harvey.
Hill and the defense worked around a pair of Albany hits in the bottom of the ninth before wrapping up the 3-0 victory. Hill, who moves to 6-1 on the year, went the distance in the win as she scattered eight hits while tallying 11 strikeouts in the shutout win.
In game two, the Great Danes jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Kelly Costello began the scoring with a solo home run before Elizabeth Snow's single brought in Albany's second run of the inning.
Maine cut the lead in half with a single run in the top of the second. Harvey started the inning with a double before Nikki Byron's (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) single brought in Maine's first run of the game.
Albany added three runs in the bottom of the third, keyed by Snow's two RBI double down the left field line.
The Black Bears had an immediate answer as they pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth. With one away in the inning, Samantha Ralphs dropped a single into left field before advancing on a bunt single from Koslosky. Felicia Lennon (Brookfield, Conn.) plated Samantha Ralphs with a double to left. Maine added two more runs on Burk's single up the middle.
Alexa Toole advanced the Great Dane lead to 6-4 when she led off the home half of the fourth with a solo home run. The six runs would be all Albany needed as it took game two by a score of 6-4.
Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) started game two in the circle for Maine as she went 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Kyle Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) went 0.2 innings in relief, surrendering one run on two hits. Hill finished out the game, tossing three innings of no-hit, shutout ball with three strikeouts.
Maine returns to action with its home opener on Friday, April 11 when it hosts UMBC at 3 p.m. Maine and UMBC will close out its series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
