Hill's One-Hit Shutout Leads Softball to Doubleheader Split at Bryant
SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Hannah Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) tossed a one-hit shutout while Maddie Moore (McLean, Va.) added a two-run home run to power the University of Maine softball team to a 2-0 victory over Bryant in game two of a doubleheader. Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) added a solo shot in game one but the Black Bears fell 7-1.
In game one, Bryant pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first inning, putting Maine in an early hole that it was unable to come out of as the Black Bears were defeated 7-1. Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) drove in the lone run for Maine as she went 2-for-3 with a home run. Maine tallied eight total hits in the contest.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a four run advantage in the home half of the first. Madsen plated the first run with a RBI single to left center before Jessica Benacquista's double to the gap in right center scored another. Hayley Bottino followed by giving the Bulldogs two more runs with a home run to left center.
Maine answered in the top of the second as Burk led off the inning with her team-leading fourth home run, an opposite field shot to right center.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings to run its lead out to 7-1.
The Black Bears threatened in the top of the fourth when Rachel Harvey (Southington, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on back-to-back singles from Nikki Byron (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and Samantha Ralphs (Lebanon, Ill.). However, Maine was unable to plate a run in the inning as Bryant held on for a 7-1 victory.
Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) fell to 4-9 in the loss as she gave up six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Kylie Sparks (Kirkland, Wash.) tossed 2.0 innings of relief, surrendering one run on one hit.
Elle Madsen went the distance for Bryant in earning her 22nd win of the season (22-9) as she gave up just one run on eight hits with five strikeouts.
In game two, Maine took a two run lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. With two away in the inning, Harvey sliced a single through the left side. Moore followed the single by belting her second home run of the year, giving the Black Bears a 2-0 advance.
Hill shut the Bulldogs down the rest of the way, allowing just one bunt single while striking out eight for her ninth win of the season.
Maine ends the 2013-14 season at 18-19 overall and 8-9 in America East play.
