Softball Falls to UMBC in Season Finale

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team closed out its 2008 season on Sunday with a 10-0 loss to UMBC at Mike Kessock Field in Orono. The Black Bears concluded their regular season with an 11-39 record and a 10-11 mark in America East play. UMBC improved to 24-27 and 12-9 in the league, while also earning a spot in next week's league playoffs.

Ashley Waters had Maine's lone hit on the afternoon. She also drew three walks as she reached base safely all four times she stepped to the plate. Waters ended the season with a .352 batting average and a .612 slugging percentage while also posting a .400 on-base percentage -- all team highs. She also blasted a team-best 10 home runs this year.

Christine McGivney got the start in the pitching circle for Maine and suffered the loss after yielding six runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over two innings of work. Cayleigh Montano came on in relief and worked the final five innings yielding four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

UMBC exploded for six runs in the second inning and never looked back. Kali Shirk homered in the fourth to put the UMBC up 7-0. The Retrievers tacked on three runs in the seventh to cap the scoring.
